BIOGRAPHY

Peter Mac is excited  to be performing with a LIVE audience back in his hometown NYC. On November 2nd, 2023 Mac celebrated his 21st year performing as the woman unhesitatingly billed and declared as “The World’s Greatest Entertainer”, Ms. Judy Garland. His mantra: “Imitation is supposed to be the sincerest form of FLATTERY not BATTERY!

He began his career as “the rainbow diva” in his autobiographical play, Judy and Me. The play recounts Mac’s adolescence, growing up in the narrow minded and homophobic town of Elmont, Long Island. At the age of 12, he discovered that “Dorothy” had grown up and made records (which like Judy, are making a comeback!).

After a horrific day at school, being called various gay slurs, beaten up, or having his eye glasses broken he would go home and escape into his darkened basement, and find comfort and joy in listening to Miss Garland’s music and watching her movies.

Judy and Me ran Off-Off Broadway at Greenwich Village’s famed Rose’s Turn for two years. In 2008, the show made its official Off-Broadway premiere at St. Luke’s Theatre in Manhattan. The play ran through December of that year.

In 2012, he received The Southern California Motion Picture Council Golden Halo Award. For “Outstanding Achievement In Live Performances as The Great Judy Garland”. The award was presented to Mac in a Gala Celebration in Hollywood by Academy Award-Winner, Margaret O’ Brien (Meet Me in St. Louis) and Garland’s Best friend and co-star, Mickey Rooney. Rooney proclaimed, “I knew her (Judy) and I loved her and this is beyond an imitation. This is an artist! Peter Mac is phenomenal!”

Mac also received two Eddon Awards from Broadway World Critic, Don Grigware. “Star Making Performer” of 2011 and “Best Cabaret Artist- Male for “Becoming Judy” 2011. He made his Off-Broadway debut at 16 as “Archie” in the jazz musical, “Ferryboat. Followed by a leading role of irrepressible would-be porn star,“Ricky” in Ronnie Larson’s hit comedy, “Making Porn”. Baring it all eight times a week alongside adult legends, Ryan Idol and Blue Blake. Mac would reprise his role in the National Tour in San Francisco.

One of the roles closest to Mac’s heart is that of “Peter Van Damm” in the dramatic musical, Anne Frank: A Voice Heard. Other favorite roles include: “Tony” (West Side Story), “Matt” (The Fantastiks), “Judas” (Godspell), “Hero”, (A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum) “Joey” (Had To Skip the Prom, So I Got My Nipples Pierced), “Bobby” (Exit Laughing).

In 2007, Mac penned his first book, Cinema Salem: A Cinematic Guide to Witch City. The book chronicles over 90 years of films, plays, television shows based upon the infamous Salem Witch Trials. Also as a writer Mac was a contributor to The Huffington Post for several years, and has also written Op-ed articles for The Advocate. Currently he’s writing a memoir entitled, Don’t Let This Happen To You! and his first fiction novel.

In 2003, Mac created the hit show, The Golden Girls LIVE: ON STAGE! with his husband of 20 years, Dr. John Mac. Since then he has written several “new lost episodes” based upon the hit sitcom including the “reunion” show that ardent fans of the television series had so greatly wished for.

Among his cadre of ladies you can also see him perform as: Liza Minnelli, Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Elaine Stritch, Dame Edna, Gwen Verdon, Peggy Lee, Julia Child, Carol Channing, Little Edie Beale, Bea Arthur, Helen Reddy, Bebe Neuwirth…just to name a few!
